Looking to build a 383. This is what I have. 1 pice rear main block (880) 4 bolt main. Scat 383 crank, 5.7 rods ,Speed Pro H860CP30 383 Flat Top Pistons . A set of heads World S/R I 052. Performer rpm airgap intake. All I need is a hydraulic roller cam and lifters for this block. Everything I have listed I have lying around in my shop, so all I am going to pay for is machine work for the block. My goal here is to build a 383 that is all torque for a wood hauling truck plus tow hall like a trailer for camping. I guess what I’m asking is for a cam recommendation and if these heads will work with this combination. Thanks again for your time great informational video.

But such a fantastic power curve for torque and horsepower with an extremely streetable and livable RPM band. My therapy additional videos such as how it carries past Peak horsepower rpm? Math, and attention to detail [plus a few decades worth of experience I sure don't have]. Find one of Vizards cylinder head videos where he's using flow balls for instance. If the head will let him, there's a 90-110 degree portion of the [intake side] chamber area he unshrouds kind of like a scroll housing about the valve: keep it opening up progressively from sidewall towards spark plug boss to promote both low lift flow and some swirl.

I can understand your thoughts. Think about how many years ago that was ???, cam design has really advanced and you need to read up on David Vizard his cylinder head porting is incredible, he has designed ports for some of the big name Cylinder head Companies. I have been in business for 44 years and I have worked with David for over 15 Years in engine combinations. My Dyno numbers are correct not exaggerated. I have learned a lot from David and still am. Thank you for your thoughts Terry

The 306hp 289s were not outright racing engines. They were mildly modified production 289 hipos. Stock small solid flat cam. Stock unported 289hipo heads. These heads arent great with stock valves and ports. Stock compression. All CS did was add headers, intake, carb, oil pan and valve covers. For R model cars, racing cobras and trans am fords with 289s/302s other work was done and a lot more power was made. hp varied from engine to engine. Heads were either heavily ported 289 hipo(often from Valley Head Service) or the gt40 program head, casting C6FE which is much better. Way larger valves. Much bigger cams. Some of todays cams and heads are extremely good compared to the 60s stuff. Even head porting on stock heads is understood a lot better. Combine that with higher compression and the power levels get even higher. 470hp in a 289 is no doubt a ton. But its not unheard of today.
